Back to BlockTanks!

Newsletter #1

Welcome to the BlockTanks Newsletter! This website/newsletter will act as a “changelog” so you can stay in-the-loop on everything about BlockTanks. As BlockTanks developers, we agreed that having a centralized source of information would be greatly beneficial to the game.

Where Have We Been?

You might be reading this in your email inbox, from a social media post, or from BlockTanks itself. It may have been a while since you heard the name BlockTanks, or you may play it everyday. For the past few years, we have mostly used our Discord server to interact with the BlockTanks community, but we would like to branch out more because we know many of our players do not even use Discord!

For the past year, we worked on a different game that we released on September 18th. However, that game did not do well enough to justify keeping it. So, after a lot of time and consideration, we decided to come back to BlockTanks with an intentional effort to grow the game and boost the current community!

Wait… Who is “we?”

BlockTanks is owned and operated by Karate Fox Studios, LLC. I (Kevin) own this company, and I help coordinate the projects we work on. For the foreseeable future, our one-and-only project is going to be BlockTanks, meaning everyone at the company will be contributing to the game. Right now, our team includes:

  • Myself (CEO/Manager)
  • A few programmers
  • A community manager

Additionally, it’s important to realize all of us are students, meaning the rate at which updates are published will reflect that!

We also have many volunteers that help keep BlockTanks running, including:

  • Chat moderators
  • Artists
  • Event coordinators

Our “Blind-Spots”

One of the first things we did when coming back to BlockTanks was create a list of “blind-spots,” or weaknesses that prevent the game from growing:

  • Design: issues that relate to the structure or gameplay of BlockTanks.
    • Bots in BlockTanks basically give free XP to players because they are really easy to kill.
    • There are too many matches at any given time, spreading out players across matches.
    • The community calendar is rarely used.
    • There is no framework of adding new abilities or mechanics to BlockTanks: we feel like we have too many “weapons” and we have no system for adding non-weapon “abilities” or power-ups.
  • Technical: issues that relate to the code of the game.
    • The code is very old (dating back to 2016) and hard to read.
    • Some visual hacks are possible, such as adding tracers or removing roofs.
    • There are frequent bugs with the UI.
    • Previous bad coding structures/practices make it difficult to update the game quickly.
  • Community: issues with engaging with the BlockTanks community.
    • We don’t communicate our updates well.
    • As previously mentioned, Discord is used a little too much.
    • We do not have a public record of game updates.

Our Roadmap

In all honesty, taking time away from BlockTanks has helped me to better understand where the game’s limitations are, and so I really do look forward to improving the game with that new knowledge.

In no particular order, here are some of the ways we plan to address the current problems with BlockTanks.

  • Refactoring Code: We will invest a lot of time in improving the code behind BlockTanks. Although this is mostly “behind-the-scenes,” this will fix many bugs and allow us to add features faster in the future.
  • Visual Improvements: Working on our new game taught us a lot about optimizing graphics, and we have expanded our ability to create good graphics. In BlockTanks, we will be adding:
    • Tank treads
    • Bullet trails
    • Smoother gameplay
  • Bot Changes: We will lower the XP given by bot kills to a very negligible amount to eliminate bot “farming.” Furthermore, we will only take non-bot kills into account when displaying player K/D ratios.
  • Match Optimization: Game modes will rotate each day so there are fewer matches per region, creating higher player counts per match.
  • Team Balancing: Keeping teams fair is a big priority for us.
  • Community Calendar: Will no longer be restricted to VIP members.
  • Social Media: BlockTanks will be active on more platforms outside of Discord to attract new players.
  • Translations: The text on BlockTanks will be translated into multiple languages so more players across the world can access the game.
  • Official Events: We will start livestreaming official BlockTanks events to drive activity and attention to the website.

We hope you enjoyed this post, and we would love to hear your thoughts!

Sincerely,

Kevin Champagne

Karate Fox Studios, CEO

clans are pretty obsolete right now, any plans to improve their place in the game?

Good question, I think that promoting clan wars would be a good use of clans. This is technically already possible using “match filters” (here’s a video showing how: https://youtu.be/f2pI4TJQ29k?feature=shared&t=264).

So on our end, the best thing we can do is lead by example and host clan wars, like the “STAFF vs community” livestream we did on Saturday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxM2-czr2ew

What opportunities exist for new people to volunteer in BlockTanks?

We have a few different opportunities ranging from being a moderator to YouTube partner. Most of that stuff is coordinated through our Discord server!

Are there current opportunities? I don’t see any other than YouTube partnership that appear to be ongoing

Right now it’s just YouTube partners and artists. When we are looking for moderators or community managers, we usually put an application out on Discord.

It’s awesome to see such support from the devs as it’s pretty rare to find an .io game this polished and dev-supported. Looking forward to the future of BlockTanks!

Thank you so much! We did take a break from BlockTanks for a while, but I really think that if we come back and intentionally stay in touch with the BlockTanks community, we can stand apart from a lot of online games.

Hey Kevin, thank you for doing this!! I have a couple suggestions in mind, such as once the player base gets much better maybe add a feature for ranked gameplay? like for ranked, there would be an elo system on top of the already existing xp system. I have a couple other suggestions if you would like to dm me on discord. (Enufu) my in game username is ryoth. This is awesome, glad block tanks will finally get the improvement it so very much needs!

Hey Ryoth, thanks for commenting! I’ve thought about an ELO system before, and it would definitely be something that’s more reflective of someone’s skill level when compared to just XP. I think it’s just a matter of figuring out how many people would be interested in ranked/competitive BlockTanks.

Hi Kevin. Saw the new updates and am pretty excited. But I also have a few concerns on the updates(hopefully soon). Bullet trails and tank treads will make dodging much harder, and also that some modes may be extremely unpopular(like FFA and payload) and there are many other modes some players may not like. Will there be a rework of those modes or may you always keep the most popular game mode(in Asia it is 16v16) in cycle? Also, by adding adding special abilities like spells is reneging on your promise that your aim is to keep the game simple(unlike Fortnite) which will attract many players to other games. Please review. Thanks.

      Hi Bond,

I think that if bullet trails and tank treads are subtle, it will not impair the ability to play the game but rather make it feel more immersive.

In terms of cycling the modes, I think the goal is to keep the most popular/basic modes (like 16v16 and FFA) all the time, and then rotate in a “special” mode each day (like CTF, payload, battle royale, 3v3, or even new modes). This would create a minimum of three matches instead of six, which should help consolidate the players. This would be very beneficial because multiplayer games thrive on seeming “active”.

Lastly, adding abilities would be a simple system so BlockTanks itself stays simple. You would be able to collect only one ability at a time, and there would be one button you press to use it. Abilities would be things that aren’t weapons but still useful (dashing, shields, etc).

I’m glad to see BT is going to get more attention now! I want to say I was one of the only people who actually played Tile Racers every other day and actually spent the time to get good at it, so I was pretty sad to see it fail. I do have a suggestion however, when eliminating xp gained from bots, you should increase xp gained from player kills from 10 xp to 15. Also just a heads up for Kevin, I will message you on discord later today because there are a few things I’ve been meaning to ask you about, so please respond to that whenever you can, I know you are a very busy person and I would really appreciate if you took 5 minutes today to answer those questions. -Mayor Absurd

Glad to hear you liked Tile Racers 🙂
I don’t know about increasing the player kill XP mainly because it would “inflate” the ability to gain XP, which might not be fair to past players.

I’ll try to respond if you message me on Discord lol

Hi, I like this new newsletter thing and also that people can reply to it and you actually respond, I thought the game was dead and that you wouldn’t come back to it when you launched TileRacers but all of the updates look really cool! I was thinking maybe adding more clan features. Also making a good system where everyone can make suggestions Nolt was good but people would just spam random things. The BlockTanks Community has some good suggestions but as you said not everyone has Discord.
I was “retired” from BlockTanks but after reading this I think I might become more active 😉

Thanks for the kind words! I think that (at least so far), I have gotten the nicest comments on WordPress, so I may just keep using this website to collect feedback from individuals. I don’t know if I put it in the post, but one of the goals going forward is to also publish surveys that quantitatively collect feedback so I’m not relying on just a few opinions to make decisions.

Hello Kevian, may I suggest a few ideas for the future of the game? As you may already know, most of the Block Tanks community consists of school-going individuals who do not have access to Discord. Therefore, could you please consider adding a feature that allows Discord posts to be imported onto Block Tanks? Additionally, it would be great if you could create a moderator or job application feature on Block Tanks.

If by “Discord posts” you mean announcements, then sure, one of our goals is to expand outside of Discord for communication. However I think we will keep the moderation/volunteer jobs on Discord because it’s our main way of chatting with fans in real time

ok, removing xp for bot grind is pretty good, and making a lot of players in each round is also very good. But i feel like you should not remove kills you get from bot, because it not fair the bot kills you and you get the death, but when you kill the bot, you dont get anything. Removing bot grind is good, but i feel like you should give more xp for killing players and gettiing killstreak should get a higher bonus or something.

I have a suggestion, I would like to see some new gamemodes, this maybe a bit too much for you, but I feel like after a while of playing, I get bored of blocktanks even with the gamemodes we have already have. Some gamemodes some people might like manhunt. Players will spawn with 1 point, and get THEIR points after each kill. BUT, the player with the most points should be displayed in a minimap, therefore, it is manhunt.
I would really like to see ANY type of gamemodes, I’m pretty sure some other people would like to play more of this game.
